I saw a Macintosh for the first time at my friend home, back in October 1994, it was a
LC with
System 7. The smiling little Mac telling "Welcome in Macintosh" was wonderful, the GUI was fantastic and the Lucas Arts Adventures were really extraordinary. Both Amiga and Macintosh, at that time, had something in common, they were both elegant, clear and beautiful, but what it's really more important is that both had something that made you feel the need to go beyond, to dig into, to explore and to create! It's easy explainable, then, why me and my friend had more fun creating little "games" with the old Macromedia Director 4, recording our system sounds (wow, macs had got mic in plug by default!) and exploring the system with ResEdit and all these hack tools than playing Doom in LAN (yes, he had got 2 macs and they had both an AppleTalk net plug by default!). I've seen a big part of the mac history at my friend home, from when he installed System 7 to the coming of PowerMacs, MacOS8 and so on. I can remember me trying to emulate it on the Amiga, first on my unexpanded 1200 in the last part of 1999, but failing, I hadn't the necessary ram, then I went a lot better with the expanded 1200 and the PowerPC equipped one, emulating the Mac was possible and it was very usable! (many thanks to the developers of ShapeShifter and Fusion) I still have the need, sometimes, to boot MacOS8 in BasiliskII on my Linux box... :-) By the way, me and my friend shared this beautiful and silly creative age together, and I'm very glad, thank you Endroz! :-) |
