Update on #Hokaloron: Protest March, Mass Gathering and Occupy Karunamoyee

On the 9th of February, 2015, the people demanding their right to employment following their clearance of the Staff Selection Committee Examination, 2012, who have also gone on a fast unto death, accompanied by sympathising students from various institutions and concerned citizens, organized a massive protest march, from 10:00 AM onward, from the SSC Bhavan in front of which they were fasting, to Bikash Bhavan, a stone’s throw from the Karunamoyee Bus Stand. They were promised an audience by the Minister of Higher Education in West Bengal, and once they reached Bikash Bhavan, a representative team from the gathering went in to hold discussions with the Minister. The protesting gathering was surrounded by the police and RAF (Rapid Action Force). At 4:30 PM, the representative team returned to the gathering and it was decided among the protesters that they are not satisfied with the responses of the Minister of Higher Education. They demanded an intervention by the Chief Minister of West Bengal and started occupying Karunamoyee indefinitely, with the police. The occupy was lifted at around 7:30 PM, when the Chief Minister assured the protesters of a discussion within a couple of days. The protesters have now returned to the front of SSC Bhavan, continuing their fast unto death until their demands are met.
