Dalit Woman Stripped and Forced To Drink Urine By Upper-Caste Couple Over Land Dispute
5th September, Madhya Pradesh, Chattarpur: In an outrageous incident that took place in Mundwara village of Madhya Pradesh, a Dalit woman was stripped naked and forced to consume urine by an upper caste couple.
On 3rd Sept 2015, the victim along with a group of people belonging to her caste at Mundwara village in Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh went to the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Neeraj Pandey in order to lodge a complaint against the local police station that allegedly refused to take any action against the accused upper caste couple.
According to her complaint to the ASP she was granted a “patta” of a piece of land belonging to the government some months ago. The ownership of this piece of land was previously enjoyed by Vijay Yadav, one half of the accused couple. Upon receiving this news, an angry and jealous Yadav sent his cattle over to the dalit woman’s land in order to damage the crops.
On 26th Aug 2015, the victim went to Yadav’s house to voice her protest. Yadav wasn’t at home at the moment but his wife, Vimla allegedly beat her up with lathis. In the meantime, Yadav returned and joined his wife in the inhumane act of stripping the dalit woman while forcing her to consume urine. Thereafter she was also threatened to be presented with graver consequences lest she chooses to lodge a complaint against them.
Despite the threat she went ahead and lodged her complaint at Nowgong Police Station. The case was registered under IPC Section 394, 323, 506 and 34. Apart from that, relevant sections of SC/ST Act were also slapped against the upper caste couple, Vimla and Vijay.
No actions were taken by the police thus far. However, the SP of Chattarpur, Lalit Shakhyawar claimed that though the case was registered by the local police, the dalit woman “didn’t inform them about any such occurrence”.
Later, Shakhyawar told HT: “I have instructed the sub-divisional officer of police to conduct a probe and take action against accused couple.”
The couple is currently absconding.
These atrocious reports on dalit oppression are not new in Madhya Pradesh. A dalit girl, in the month of June, was beaten up by upper caste women because her shadow fell on an upper caste man.
