From Screen to Streets

People’s Film Collective is an independent, people-funded cultural-political group based in West Bengal. Formed in 2013, they believe in the power of moving images and conversations around them as a weapon of pedagogy of the oppressed as well as alternative media for people’s movements. Through the year, they organise monthly film screenings and conversations in Kolkata. They travel within Kolkata and its neighbouring districts to screen films, movemental videos and hold conversations on socio-political questions. Their members document movements, make videos, campaign materials and political documentaries. They often work hand-in-hand with non-funded like-minded groups, unions and mass organisations. They organise an annual film festival, called the Kolkata People’s Film Festival. They are particularly interested in screening and collaborating with collectives of workers, women, children, young adults, civil society activists and people’s movements.
