William S. Burroughs Memorial Tribute

This memorial tribute to the writer/painter William S. Burroughs, a seminal
literary figure and godfather of the Beat Generation, is long overdue. Born
February 5, 1914, Burroughs achieved international recognition for his
novel Naked Lunch (the subject of an "obcenity" court trial; made into a
film by  David Cronenberg), and many other books including the recently
released Word Virus, a "best of" anthology published by Grove Press and
edited by Ira Silverberg and James Grauerholz. Burroughs died August 2,
1997 near his home in Lawrence, Kansas. The above speakers will give
personal recollections and anecdotes. Rarely-screened short films inspired
by and featuring Burroughs will open the evening. A "dream machine", based
on the design invented by Burroughs' longtime associate Brion Gysin and
extolled by Burroughs himself in such books as The Job, is also on the
agenda for public inspection.

The auditorium only seats 250, so tickets will be sold on a first come,
first serve basis. Attendees are urged to arrive early. Sorry, no
reservations.
